Do You Still Need to Maintain Your AC in the Fall?
It’s been a long, hot summer in East Peoria, IL, and you might be looking forward to the cooler days of autumn. Even after summer’s over, you’ll still need to do a few things for your air conditioner. Follow these three steps to maintain your air conditioner at the end of the summertime.
1. Replace the Filter
It’s possible that you’ll still need cooling functions in autumn. If you haven’t replaced the air conditioner’s filter in a while, now is a good time to do that. Be sure to check the filter each month. As soon as it’s visibly dirty, replace it. At a minimum, replace the filter every three months.
2. Clean the Unit
East Peoria is known for heavy pollen levels, and those persist well into autumn. Once per month through the fall, wash the outdoor unit. Make sure the unit’s power is off. Use a garden hose with a sprayer attachment to rinse pollen, sap, and dirt off the unit’s housing. Disconnect the condensate pipe and rinse it with a bleach solution. Inside your home, remove vent covers and clean them. Pet hair, dust, and dirt coat the registers and impede airflow. Once outdoor temperatures drop to freezing, it’s time to stop washing the outdoor unit until next spring.
3. Consider a Cover
If you have a central air conditioner, you might want to cover the outdoor unit. Only use a cover that’s specifically designed for air conditioners. The cover protects the unit from debris that could settle into the housing during the winter months. If you have a heat pump that functions as an air conditioner, don’t cover it. These systems are dual-function and heat your home in the wintertime. Covering a heat pump could cause it to fail.
