Tips for Furnace Safety
After months of not being used, it will soon be time to use your furnace once again. Your heating system needs proper maintenance so that it remains safe to use. Here are a few tips to follow that will reduce the chances of a house fire.
Schedule a Tune-up
You should schedule a furnace tune-up every fall before you use it. A licensed technician will thoroughly inspect your furnace during a tune-up and make sure it’s safe to use. This includes making sure there isn’t gas leaking from the furnace or the pipe leading to it. They’ll also vacuum the inside of your furnace to remove dirt, dust, and other debris that can cause problems.

You should inspect your furnace filters every year before you turn the unit on. A dirty filter reduces the efficiency of your furnace and can cause other problems. You should replace filters every month or two when your furnace is in use.
Keep Flammables Away
You shouldn’t store anything that is flammable near your furnace. This includes paper, clothes, cardboard boxes, flammable liquids, and paint. Keep these items at least 15 feet away from your furnace.
Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms every fall. You should replace their batteries at least once a year. You should have smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home.
Ensure Proper Ventilation
Your furnace needs proper ventilation to perform safely. Make sure that all of your registers are open and unobstructed. While you shouldn’t close any registers, if you do, don’t close more than 20% of them.
